Obituary

Safe in the arms of our Lord, Betty quietly and peacefully entered into eternal rest on Friday, October 17, 2025.

Bettie was born on September 29, 1939, in Richmond, Virginia, to Adele and Clarence Braxton. She was the second of four children. Her sisters, Clarice Anderson (VA) and Beatrice Adele Braxton (NY); her oldest brother, Dallas “Dopey” Davis (CA), preceded her in death.

Bettie was educated in the Virginia, California, and New York Public School systems.

Bettie met and married the love of her life, Vernon Scott Seymour. In this union, three children were born: two daughters, Shonia Marcia and Lisa Michelle, and one son, Vernon Scott (Scotty) Jr.

As a child, Bettie attended Calvary Baptist Church. Betty’s faith in God was strong. As a young mother with three small children, she was diagnosed with the disease lupus. Betty and Big Scotty never gave up hope. God kept Betty strong for 70 years, with intervention from great doctors along with prayers from family and friends. She was truly blessed.

Bettie’s first job was creating dolls at the Ideal Toy Factory. She later became employed as a manager for the first ShopRite Supermarket in Queens.

Bettie enjoyed going to family functions and clubs. She loved to dance; she stayed on the dance floor.

She had a passion for playing numbers and hosting card parties. She was the queen of poker and bid whist.

Bettie was also a darn good cook. She made the best homemade biscuits, peas and rice, succulent, tender roast beef, and delicious coconut custard pies, just to name a few. She was known for her generosity in the kitchen, always cooking not only for her family and friends, but for anyone in need of a meal.

Her greatest joy was being a mother and helping raise her grandchildren, niece, and nephew, as well as other friends children.

People would call her for advice or information. Her phone was a lifeline for many people.

Our beloved Bettie Lee leaves to cherish fond memories: her beloved children, Shonia Seymour, Lisa Seymour, and Scotty Seymour; sisters, Clarice Anderson (VA) and Beatrice Adele Braxton (NY); grandchildren, twins Von and Venay Seymour and David Wallace; granddaughter-in-law, Melissa Wallace; great-grandchildren, O’Ryan, Mia Sky, and McKenzie; niece, Tameka Anderson and Jerrie Davis Johnson; nephews, Dallas Davis Jr. (CA) and Derrick Braxton; great-niece, Danielle McClean, and Zoe Braxton.

Cousins: Delores Macon (AZ), Alfongia Wilkerson (CA), Gladys Walcott (NY), Linda Randall (NY), Olga Baston (NY), Burniece Poindexter (VA), Audrey Pack (VA), William Billy Mapp (VA), Edward Fleming (VA), and Dr. Veronica Jenkins (MD).

Best friends: Dorothy Morton, Mozell Williams, and Mrs. McClean.

And a host of so many dear relatives and friends who loved her.

She’s gone but will never be forgotten.
