Obituary

Gena Jennifer Jones-Azhar made her entrance into the world on July 02, 1968 in Montrose, Christ Church located in beautiful Barbados. She was the daughter and only child of Sirlene Jones and the late Alvin Jones. Gena later moved to Silver Hill in the same parish with her family. There, she attended Christ Church Girl’s primary school in Oistins. Upon completion of her education there, she attended Princess Margaret Secondary School in St. Philip, the parish over.

In the year 1986, Gena migrated to the U.S.A and continued her studies earning her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the Long Island University. She worked as a nurse in the healthcare field for many years providing care to many patients. In her more recent years, she delivered care to many women at the Wyckoff Hospital Women’s Health Center where she was loved not only by the patients, but the staff. Gena was a favorite among the doctors and nurses she worked with daily not only for her intelligence and expertise but also for the compassion and love in which she delivered care.

Gena was a patient, peaceful, kind, beautiful and loving soul who always extended herself to help her family and fellow man. Although she was one of the sweetest people you could meet, she was a no nonsense woman when necessary; one of the qualities of being what she referred to as “Alvin’s daughters” or “Alvin’s children”. Gena was a God fearing and faithful servant who knew she was fully known and loved by God. She loved crocheting, meditating, listening to music, dancing and cooking. If you’ve had her food, sweet bread, pudding or punch, you know exactly what I mean! More than these however, she cherished spending time with her family, friends and loved ones. She showed up for those she loved in all capacities. Not only would Gena show up physically but she would show up with a gift in her hands. She did not have children of her own, but she treated her nieces, nephews, great nieces and cousins as if they were. She loved them, supported them and was very present in their lives.

Gena transitioned on May 17, 2026 and is survived by her mother Sirlene Jones, Aunts: Frederica and Harriet Jones, Beverly Cummins, Heather Savoury, Lucien Welch, Priscilla Jones, Sonia and Verona Rawlings and the Chase family; Uncles: Edric Jones and Melvin Rawlings; Sisters: Karen Dobson, Sharmaine Hurley, Serena, Michelle and Jessica Jones and her stepmother, Ann Jones; Brothers-in-law: Vaughn Dobson and Giovanni Hurley; Cousins: Telcy Salaou, Dakari Edgehill, Anthony and Donavan Jones, Andre and Tonia Evelyn; Nieces: Chanel, Samara, Sophia and Brianna; Nephews: Stephon, Joseph, Jamal and Jayden; Great nieces: Alora and Jaylani; Friends: Mechelle Agard, Reja Sam and many others. May she rest in peace.
