Martin Lewis
Sledge
Aug 7, 1968 — Nov 1, 2025
On Wednesday, August 7, 1968, in Manhattan, New York, a precious baby boy named Martin Lewis Sledge was born at Flowers Fifth Avenue Hospital, welcomed with love by his proud parents James and Theresa Johnson Sledge, and his big brother Mychal.
Martin attended elementary and middle school within the New York City School System and later attended LaSalle Academy High School in New York City. During his junior year, Martin's father retired, and his family moved to Cheraw, South Carolina, where he completed his high school education and graduated from Cheraw High School. Martin continued his academic journey at Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Communications.
A devoted son, brother, and friend, Martin cherished his family deeply. He held his older brother Mychal in high esteem and enjoyed visiting his cousins in New York, especially Glenda, Perry, Derrick, Sharon, Lisa, and Andre.
In South Carolina, high school brought new adventures and the beginning of Martin's passion for music and DJing, collaborating closely with his cousin JJ, whom he regarded as a younger brother. Martin also cherished the special moments spent with his younger cousins, Craig and Jackie, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
After receiving his degree, Martin followed his dreams to Atlanta, Georgia, where he embraced his love for DJing and physical fitness. Known as "DJ Money," he performed at large venues while maintaining a full-time job at Americold Logistics, where he also served as shop steward. Dedicated to fitness, Martin transformed his basement into a personal gym he affectionately called "the Dungeon." His hobbies included fishing, scuba diving, and a love for the arts. To many, he was also known as York, a testament to his vibrant social presence.
Martin’s legacy is carried on by those who loved him most: his mother, Theresa Sledge; brother, Mychal (Debra); uncle and aunts, Jack and Patricia Johnson and Christine Gary; nieces, Tiffany Smith (Carlos), Chanel Holder (Brandon), and Mykkia Sledge; as well as a host of loving cousins and friends.
Martin’s joyful spirit, his devotion to the almighty God, family, and enduring passion for music and life will forever be treasured in the hearts of all who knew him.
