Mattie Evelyn Davis was born on August 7th, 1930 to Henry Devane and Lillie Herring in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She attended Ammie W. Holland Elementary School and then the Booker T. Washington schools all in North Carolina from middle school to high school and graduated.

On October 1952, she completed a 3 year course of study at the Training School for Nurses at Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 1953 she came to New York where she received her Registered Nurse license and later met and married Brownie W. Davis. From this union came Brenda and Bruce Davis.

During this time she worked at New York Hospital as an RN in the pediatric department while living in Brooklyn, NY. Roughly 20 years later, the Davis family moved to Laurelton, NY where she worked at the US Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Albans. She started out as a staff nurse and then advanced to becoming a charge nurse until her retirement in 2003.

Throughout her career she received various certificates. She received a certificate of completion for Nursing in the New Age: A Nutritional Approach to Healing on October 27th, 1982. In January of 1983, April of 1984, and May of 1986, she received her certificate of Training by the Veterans Administration. On July 13th, 1983 she was awarded the Life Group Bernice DaCosta Memorial Award in Nursing by VA-ECC F-3.

In 1983 and 1984 she was given the certificate of Appreciation for Volunteer and Service at Town Hall Civic Association of Springfield Gardens Health Fair. In 1986 she received a certificate from the Veterans Administration for her completion of 10 years in the Federal Service. Then on October 21st, 1988, she became certified in Risk Management for Nursing Managers. She devoted 27 years of service to the deserving veterans of our country.

Mattie also became a member of the Laurelton Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs Incorporated for a total of 40 years. She served as President twice from 1994-1998 and then from 2002-2004. She also served as Corresponding Secretary, Youth Advisor, and First Vice President. On July 19th, 2003 she was recognized as a Long Standing Life Member and in 2012 she received an award for her 33 years of dedicated service. On August 21st, 2023 she was recognized again as a Long Standing Life Member.

While living in Laurelton, she joined The Greater Allen AME Cathedral of Jamaica, NY where she was a member for over 40 years. She attended regularly and became apart of the Cancer Ministry as she was a breast cancer survivor.

Mattie lived a long and full life filled with love and laughter. While she will be greatly missed, she is now reunited with beloved family members who have gone before, including her parents (Henry & Lillie aka Mom & Pop), her sisters (Dorothy, Elizabeth, & Mabel), and her brother (William).

Mattie was the proud mother of Brenda Davis & Bruce Davis, grandmother of Dana Dubois (Phillip Dubois), Alexa Davis, and Kyle Davis, and great-grandmother of Micah Dubois. She was also a proud aunt, cousin, and friend to a host of loved ones.
