Born on November 26, 1925, in Pamlico County, North Carolina, Thomas was the tenth of ten children born to the late William Matthews and Lucinda Thompson Matthews. He grew up in a strong, faith-filled household and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age.

Thomas was a mechanic, a proud military man, and a Mason. Thomas lived a life of service, strength and integrity. He was drafted and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He belonged to an Army Engineering Combat Battalion attached to the 24* Infantry Division. He was involved in combat operations in New Guinea and the Philippines, earning an honorable discharge for his service.

He was known for being tough and protective, the kind of man who looked out for those he loved. He was stubborn at times, but he would do just about anything for his family.

Thomas had a deep love for life’s simple pleasures. He loved candy. He loved jazz music and rhythm and blues. He also liked to dance. He loved to play solitaire, tunk, gin rummy, pinochle, and watch westerns.

In his personal life, Thomas’s story was one of enduring love and family. He welcomed his first daughter Rosalind with Alberta. Later, he married Thelma and together they raised two children Donna Jo and Thomas Junior. After Thelma’s passing, Thomas found companionship again with Sandra, his devoted life partner until the end of his days.

He was preceded in death by all nine of his siblings: Jessie, Odessie, Ella, Rosa, Clyde, Nettie Mae, Salis, Romeo, and Eula—each of whom he held dear. He is survived by his children, Rosalind, Donna Jo, and Thomas Jr.; his grandchildren, Tiffany and Brandon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and friends.

Thomas lived a long and full life and he is now at rest. His family takes comfort in knowing he is at peace and reunited with his loved ones who passed before him. He will be deeply missed and remembered.
